Dr. Hagberg has received specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of Positional Dizziness.
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common and curable forms of dizziness. The symptoms of BPPV include dizziness, vertigo, lightheadedness, imbalance and nausea. These symptoms are almost always precipitated by a change in head position such as lying down, getting out of bed, rolling over or looking up. BPPV causes dizziness because of debris, which has collected in the Semicircular Canals. Crystals of calcium carbonate that break away from inner ear structures called Otoliths form this debris. When changing head position these “ear rocks” bump into the sensitive balance structures causing the rapid onset of vertigo. It usually lasts from a few seconds to a few minuets. The most common cause of BPPV in patients under age 50 is idiopathic, meaning unknown. In the older population the most common cause is degeneration of the vestibular system.
Diagnosis and treatment usually begin with the Primary Care or ENT physician prescribing medication such as Antivert or Meclizine to decrease the sensitivity of the inner ear. They may also order a series of tests to rule out more serious problems. These include MRI, balance and hearing examinations.
There are two very successful treatments for BPPV if medical intervention fails to relieve the dizziness. The Epley and Semont maneuvers have a 95% cure rate. These maneuvers take about 15 minutes to complete. They are easy and painless. The debris is moved from the sensitive Semicircular Canals to a less sensitive area called the Vestibule where it is reabsorbed by the body. Dr. Hagberg is an expert in diagnosing and treating BPPV. He has treated many patients who have suffered from BPPV for years.
